Environmental Protection Department of HKSAR Government)
BA in Biology/Chemistry, MA in Microbiology (Western
Michigan University)
PhD in Microbiology (University of Hong Kong)
MSc in Medical Microbiology (London School of Hygiene
and Tropical Medicine, University of London)
Fields of interest
Water quality monitoring, management,
policy and legislation; environmental microbiology;
marine microbiology; toxic chemical pollution
Dr. Kueh conducted early studies of water pollution
in Tolo Harbour at the Marine Science Laboratory of
the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the 70s. Her
work included bacterial contamination of local oyster,
mussel and clams, and shellfish purification using the
UV depuration system. Between the late 70s and 80s,
Dr. Kueh was senior lecturer at the then Hong Kong Polytechnic
and carried out research on marine microbiology and
water pollution.
In 1988,
Dr. Kueh took up the position of microbiologist and
principal scientist at the Scientific Services Branch
of the then Sydney Water Board. In Sydney, Dr. Kueh
was in charge of monitoring coastal beaches and rivers,
and conducted pioneer studies of viral and bacterial
pollution associated with deep ocean sewage outfalls
and inland discharges.
Dr. Kueh
joined the Environmental Protection Department of the
Hong Kong SAR Government in 1991 working in the areas
of water policy, management, legislation and monitoring.
For many years, she had been managing and developing
Hong Kong's monitoring programme for marine waters,
