Habitat: larvae found in muddy bed of ponds and marshes
General appearance: body medium sized, up to about 23mm long, covered by dense hairs; head rectangular with bean-like eyes, labium mask-shaped with 6 palpal setae; wing pads extending to abdominal segment V; abdomen elongated with dorsal spines on abdominal segments IV - VIII and lateral spines on abdominal segments VIII - IX
