Habitat: larvae found in marshes, ponds and streams
General appearance: body medium large sized, up to about 20mm long, covered with hairs; head rectangular with bean-like eyes, labium mask-shaped with 8 palpal setae; wing pads extending to abdominal segment VI; dorsal spines on abdominal segments IV - VII (but actually a minute on S8), lateral spines on abdominal segments VIII - IX
