Description

Dark brown and black carapace with distinctive yellow central keel.
Plastron black with yellow edge. Hinged plastron to allow complete closure of shell.
Head olive-brown above, with a yellow stripe behind each eye
Each dorsal scute with clear growth rings. Webbed digits.
Jaw slightly beaked.

Habitat

Forest species, found in river and damp places e.g. under leaf litter. Semi-aquatic.

Behaviour Active at night during summer. Hides in damp places during daytime.
Hibernates when below 10°C.
Diet Omnivorous.
Reproduction Mating in April. Breeding between May and September.
Lays 2 eggs each time; can lay 4-8 eggs a year.
Eggs take 2 months to hatch.

Native to China, Taiwan, Japan
