Description | Body tan or almost cream-coloured, with five longitudinal rows of dark streaks interspersed with pale grey spots. Head wedge-shaped and rather flattened. Two semi-circular whitish patches on the throat. Underside of throat and belly bright yellow; Underside of tail can be grey or orange. Tail with distinct greyish-brown bars, edged with prominent saw-like spikes, but regenerated tail lacks the spikes Legs and toes heavily mottled with light and dark grey. All digits have elongated adhesive lamellae. Genus Hemidactylus is characterized by the divided lamellae on the toes. |
Habitat | An uncommon gecko, found mostly in hilly or low mountainous areas. |
Behaviour | Nocturnal. |
Diet | Feeds on small insects. |
Reproduction | Oviparous. An all-female parthenogenetic species. Lays 2 eggs. |
Distribution | Generally uncommon, widely distributed and locally common in a few areas. Known from several areas on Hong Kong Island and several parts of Lantau; Also from Shek Kwu Chau, Yim Tin Tsai, Kiu Tsui Chau, Kat O and Kau Sai Chau. Rare in New Territories, where it is known from Shing Mum, Sha Lo Tung, Sai Kung, Pat Sin Range and Plover Cove Country Park. Occurs in southern China, India across Southeast Asia to the Philippines, Indoaustralian Archipelago and Oceania. Introduced into USA. |
