Describing Terrestrial Biomes

The map illustrated here (after [Whittaker 1975] ) shows one way ofmapping terrestrial biome types.

As an exercise, you should list the biome typesillustrated here andproduce your own catalogue of terrestrial biome types by adding key diagnostic features, such as those listed below:

  • theirdistribution;
  • theirform and structure;
  • the abiotic factors (climate, soil type etc.) associated with them;
  • theircharacteristic andunique species;
  • their level of species diversity;
  • the specificenvironmental threats they may face.
