Classification of Ecological Systems

Biodiversity can be studied at the level of the gene, the species and theecological system.

At the species level, organisms can be classified in a taxonomic hierarchy, but can ecological systems be classified in a similar way?

  • How are ecological systems classified and mapped?
  • Why is it important to classify and map ecological systems?

Ecological units are generally classified on either or both of the following characters:
- thespecies that occur within them;
- thephysical characteristics of the unit.
