From Australopithecus to Homo

An image of Australopithecus from Sterkfontein (Sts 5) is being "morphed" into a corresponding image of Homo erectus (KNM-ER 3733).

  • List the features that seem to you to characterise the transformation.

How would you characterise the change in terms of the following parameters:

  • size and formation of the eyebrow ridges;
  • degree of prognathism (forward protrusion of face and jaws);
  • presence or absence of a chin;
  • height of the forehead and size of the cranial vault;
  • presence or absence of a sagittal crest?
