Classification Problems

There has been much debate over the taxonomy of the genus Homo.

Homo habilis has been controversial for a long time. Now it is suggested that habilis encompasses two species, notably Homo habilis, including the original Olduvai specimens, and Homo rudolfensis for others (eg. KNM-ER 1470).

Similar controversy surrounds H. erectus, again with two separate species suggested, notably Homo erectus for the later specimens and Homo ergaster for earlier specimens (eg. KNM-ER 992).

See [Tudge 1995] for an overview.
