BIOL4993 Molecular Biology & Biotechnology Project (2024-2025)

Registration Form | Declaration Form

Assessment Methods & Weighting

1. Dissertation:

Students are required to conduct research for at least two semesters and complete a formal write-up of the project in the style of a leading journal in their particular research field which their supervisor will select. A dissertation of 9,000-12,000 words (50% weighting of total grade) with a completed Project Declaration Form in pdf format must be submitted to Moodle by 1 May 2025, Thursday 1700. The dissertation will be examined by both the supervisor and a second examiner.

2. Continuous assessment of science communication:

While working in a research lab, students are expected to develop the ability to communicate scientific ideas by discussing the projects with their supervisors, mentors, and colleagues in the group.  Throughout the academic year, students are expected to attend group meetings to learn science communication skills and developed their own skills by presenting progress reports in regular group meetings. The supervisor will be responsible for assessing the students’ ability to communicate scientific ideas, describe experiments, and explain the results at work and during group meetings (20% weighting).

3. Oral presentation:

At the end of the project, students will be required to give a seminar on their research findings in a mini-conference, in which all FYP students will present their research. Your oral presentation will be assessed (20% weighting) by both the supervisor and a second examiner. The seminars are tentatively scheduled on 7 May 2025, Wednesday 1700.

4. Peer evaluation of research seminar:

During the academic year, attend TWO "BIOL8021 Presentation Skills and Research Seminars in Cell and Molecular Biology" (usually held on Friday mornings in Room 6N-11 of the Kadoorie Biological Sciences Building) or "Rpg Public Seminar" or "Rpg Qualifying Seminar" of their choices (please check the School’s Upcoming Events website regularly https://www.biosch.hku.hk/events/). Submit a critique of 200 to 500 words for each seminar to Moodle. Students are expected to become familiar with scientific presentation from these research seminars. The deadline for submitting the two critiques (10% weighting of total grade) is 1 May 2025, Thursday 1700.
