Description | Dorsal colour varies from dark brown to black. Two prominent whitish dorsal stripes and two thinner white lateral stripes extend from snout to tail. These four stripes eventually merge with the blue of the tail. The blue colour may fade with age. Underside greyish. Head small and triangular in females and juveniles; wider in adult males. Lower labials and part of throat have a bright pinkish-coloured streak. Snout of young individuals edged in orange around the margin. Scales smooth and glossy. |
Habitat | Mostly found in dry shrub and woodland, particularly in rocky coastal areas; occasionally found in montane grassland to over 700 m. |
Behaviour | Diurnal. A sun-loving lizard, often seen basking, but sometimes found hiding under objects. Is very swift and alert. Bites and defecates when caught. |
Diet | Feeds on termites, small litter cockroaches, crickets and earthworms. |
Reproduction | Oviparous, but number of eggs per clutch unknown. Breeds in spring. Hatchlings 5 cm in total length; brilliantly coloured. |
Distribution | Abundant on Cheung Chau Island and a few other off-shore islands. Uncommon on Hong Kong Island and rare in New Territories (Tai Lam Chung Reservoir area, Ma On Shan, Tuen Mum). Ranges from southern China to northern part of Malay Peninsula. |
