BIOL4962 Food & Nutritional Science Internship (2024-2025)
Application Form | Employer Assessment Form | Guidelines from Faculty Office
Aims & Objectives
This course aims to offer students the opportunities to gain work experience in the industry related to their major of study. The workspace learning experience would be of great benefits to the students to apply their knowledge gained in the study to the real work environments. Students have to take on at least 160 hours of internship work either within the University or outside the University.
(1) Within the University: the student will be supervised by a staff member (Supervisor), working on a project or various tasks as instructed by the Supervisor.
(2) Outside the University: The student will work in an external agency related to the major of study. The student will be supervised under a staff member of the external agency (the External Supervisor) and a staff member of the Department/School of the student (the Internal Supervisor). The work to be performed by the student will normally be instructed by the External Supervisor, with the prior agreement of the Internal Supervisor.
Assessment
Upon completion of the internship, each student is required to submit a written self-reflection report with a brief note on the nature of the internship. The report should not be less than 800 words and more than 1,000 words. Each student is also required to present 10-15 min about their internship that includes the work nature, experiences and its association with the major courses (assessed by course coordinator and/or internal supervisor). A group presentation of 20-25 min will be allowed if more than 2 students are working in the same organization. Presentations are tentatively scheduled on 4 December 2024 (1st Semester); 6 May 2025 (2nd Semester) and 26 August 2025 (Summer Semester) for internships being held during the fall, spring and summer terms respectively. Supervisors are required to have written assessment of students based on their performance during the internship period (in the case of internships outside the university, the Internal Supervisor will written assess the student based on the feedback by the External Supervisor). Satisfactory completion of this course can be counted towards the Experiential Learning requirement. Details of internship will be recorded on the student’s graduating transcript. Grading will be based on supervisor’s (employer) assessment form (50%), written report (25%) and oral presentation (25%). Students will be graded as Pass with Distinction, Pass or Fail basis. Written report and supervisor’s assessment form must reach the Department/School office on the presentation day.
Enrolment of this course is not conducted via the on-line course selection system and should be made through the relevant Department/School.
